How is the visa overstay fine calculated?
Foreigners who remain in Türkiye after their visa, visa exemption or residence permit has expired are charged, when they leave, the residence permit fee for the overstay period plus the same amount again (i.e. double). No interest or late-payment penalty is added. In practice, this is called a "visa fine" or "deportation fine".
- The overstay begins on the day after your last legal day and lasts until your exit day.
- The fee depends on your nationality: for most countries it is charged in US dollars (first month + each subsequent month); for others, the Turkish lira tariff applies.
- Every month started after the first month counts as a full month.
- Citizens of fee-exempt countries (e.g. Turkmenistan, Syria) are not charged an overstay fee; however, entry ban (giriş yasağı) rules still apply.
Example
An Azerbaijani citizen exceeded their 90-day visa-free stay allowance by 2 months. Normal fee: first month 25 USD + 1 month × 5 USD = 30 USD. The overstay fine is double that: 60 USD (paid in Turkish lira at the exchange rate on the day of exit).
What happens if the fine is not paid?
Foreigners who leave without paying the fine receive a longer entry ban, and even after the ban ends they cannot re-enter Türkiye until the unpaid amount has been paid. If your overstay is less than 3 months and you pay the fine and leave voluntarily, no entry ban applies. For details, see the entry ban calculator.
Frequently asked questions
Where is the fine paid?
The fine is usually paid at the border gate (airport) when leaving Türkiye. If the exit process was started through the governorship (Göç İdaresi), payment can also be made at the tax office.
Are the card fee and visa fee also requested?
In some cases, the border gate may also request the residence permit card fee (2026: 964 TL) and, for certain nationalities who entered visa-free, the single-entry visa fee. Practice may vary depending on the border gate and nationality.
Do under-18s also pay the fine?
Yes. Under the Harçlar Kanunu (Law on Fees), the fee is halved for under-18s; however, it is not clear how this discount is applied to the overstay fee at the border gate.
