What is a long-term residence permit?
A long-term residence permit (uzun dönem ikamet izni) is an indefinite residence permit granted to foreigners who have lived in Türkiye with a residence permit for at least 8 years without interruption. Holders enjoy the same rights as Turkish citizens, except for military service, the right to vote and stand for election, public service and the duty-free import of vehicles, and are exempt from the residence fee.
Application requirements
- 8 years of uninterrupted residence: student residence permit periods count as half, other permits count in full. Humanitarian residence, temporary protection and international protection periods do not count.
- Absence limits: not staying abroad or without a permit for more than 6 months at a time; not exceeding 180 days in any 1-year period counting back; not exceeding 1 year in total in the last 5 years. Absences due to health, education or compulsory public service are assessed separately.
- Not having received social assistance in the last 3 years.
- Sufficient and regular income: the applicant's own income must be at least the net minimum wage; when living with family, one third of the minimum wage is calculated for each person. Support from third parties is not accepted.
- Valid health insurance.
- Not posing a threat to public order or security.
Frequently asked questions
Do my years as a student count?
Yes, but only half. For example, 4 years on a student residence permit count as 2 years.
I hold a Turquoise Card; do I need to apply separately?
A permanent Turquoise Card grants the rights provided by an indefinite work permit, and these rights cover those of a long-term residence permit. A separate application is generally not required.
Where do I apply?
Applications are made via the e-İkamet system; documents are submitted to the provincial migration management directorate on the appointment day. The permit is granted by the governorship with the approval of the Presidency of Migration Management (Göç İdaresi Başkanlığı).
