Entry ban periods
Foreigners who exceed their legal period of stay receive an entry ban (giriş yasağı) depending on the length of the overstay and how they leave Türkiye. The table applied by the Presidency of Migration Management (Göç İdaresi) is as follows:
| Overstay period | Voluntary exit after payment | Exit without payment / deportation / failure to leave on time |
|---|---|---|
| Less than 3 months | No ban | 3 months |
| 3 months – 6 months | 1 month | 6 months |
| 6 months – 1 year | 3 months | 1 year |
| 1 year – 2 years | 1 year | 2 years |
| 2 years – 3 years | 2 years | 5 years |
| More than 3 years | 5 years | 5 years |
- Those who apply to the governorship and are given an exit period (invitation to leave – terke davet): if the overstay is under 3 months and they pay and leave within the period, no ban applies; for overstays of 3 months or more, the long-term table applies even if payment is made.
- The long-term table applies to those whose residence or work permit was refused/cancelled and who did not leave within the given period.
- For those deported (sınır dışı) on public order or security grounds, a ban of up to 5 years is imposed; in the case of a serious threat, it can be extended up to 10 years.
- The ban starts from the date of exit from Türkiye. If there is an unpaid overstay fee, entry is not possible until it is paid, even after the ban ends.
Can an entry ban be lifted?
Göç İdaresi can lift an entry ban or allow entry for a specific period. From abroad, an application can be made through a consulate for a visa with special permission (meşruhatlı vize); a deportation order can be challenged before the administrative court within 7 days of notification. Because these deadlines are short, contact us right away.
