What is the 90/180-day rule?

Foreigners who enter Türkiye without a visa (with a visa exemption) can stay for the period granted to their country. For most countries this is a total of 90 days within any 180-day period. For some countries it is 30 or 60 days.

The period is recalculated every day: the last 180 days counting back from the current day are taken into account, and the days you spent in Türkiye during that period are added up. Entry and exit days are also included in the length of stay.

Example

Someone who entered on 1 March and left on 29 May has used all 90 days. When this person enters again, no new stay allowance arises until the days within the last 180 days fall below 90. Leaving and immediately re-entering does not reset the period.

If you apply for a short-term residence permit (kısa dönem ikamet izni) before your stay allowance runs out, you can stay in Türkiye legally until your application is decided. Don't wait until the last few days to apply.

Frequently asked questions

What happens if I overstay?

Foreigners who exceed their period pay a visa overstay fine when leaving Türkiye; depending on the length of the overstay and how they leave, an entry ban (giriş yasağı) may also apply. You can find out the amount and any possible ban with our fine calculator and entry ban calculator.

How do I find out how many days my country is allowed?

Visa exemption periods vary by country and are published on the visa information page of the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. If you're not sure, write to us and we'll check for you.

Do days spent on a residence permit count?

No. Time you spend in Türkiye with a valid residence permit or a residence permit application document is not deducted from your visa exemption period. This tool is only for your visa-free entries.
